This happens more often than we might think\u2014especially with <a href=\"https:\/\/futureisyouth.com\/hu\/resources\/unlocking-opportunities-for-vulnerable-youth\/\">children and young people<\/a>, who generally have fewer tools to regulate their emotions or make sense of difficult experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The basics of psychological first aid were introduced by \u00c1rp\u00e1d B\u00e1rnai (\u00c9lm\u00e9nyakad\u00e9mia) at the SolutionFocus &#8211; Building Hope, Empowering Change 2025 conference. That could be any of us. We might be the first person who notices, responds, or offers support. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important that everyone has some basic first aid knowledge\u2014whether for physical or psychological wounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychological first aid is not therapy, but it is a form of care. According to the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), psychological first aid is an evidence-based, modular approach used immediately after events that trigger high stress. Its goal is to reduce initial tension, ease the impact of stress, and support short- and long-term coping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its five key components\u2014safety, calm, self-efficacy, connection, and hope\u2014are innate human capacities. You don\u2019t have to study them to know them, but it is important to make space for them consciously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-kind-of-injury-does-stress-cause\">What Kind of Injury Does Stress Cause?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ongoing or sudden stress can seriously impact the body and nervous system, leading to increased anxiety, trouble sleeping or concentrating, physical symptoms\u2014or even long-term post-traumatic reactions. If a person doesn\u2019t receive timely support, their body and nervous system can become over-activated or shut down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stress doesn\u2019t necessarily end when the immediate danger is over or physical safety is restored. It helps to think about this in terms of a common household injury: let\u2019s say you burn your hand while cooking. The damage doesn\u2019t just happen the moment you touch the hot object. These form a circle\u2014not a fixed order\u2014meaning any part can come up (again) at any time during the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-safety\">Safety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating a sense of safety is the foundation of reducing stress. It starts with presence\u2014someone is here, someone cares. It includes attending to physical needs: \u201cAre you cold?\u201d \u201cWould you like some water?\u201d A calm voice or even a handshake can help. Most importantly, we need to signal that the crisis is over. It\u2019s like planting a flag in the ground and saying: \u201cIt\u2019s behind us now.\u201d Through our words and behavior, we show that the event is over and this is now a safe space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-calm\">Calm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To calm someone in distress, we first need to calm ourselves. If we radiate tension, the other person will pick up on it. Telling someone to \u201ccalm down\u201d is rarely effective\u2014and often creates resistance. What truly helps is offering calm through our presence, voice, posture, and energy. Sometimes, less is more: fewer words, less input, less noise. Too much information or stimulation can increase stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-self-efficacy\">Self-Efficacy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk of stress-related harm decreases when people feel they have done something for themselves. Instead of doing everything for them, offer choices: \u201cWould you like some water?\u201d \u201cCan you stand up?\u201d \u201cIs there someone you\u2019d like to call?\u201d Even a small action, like lifting an arm, can restore a sense of agency. Feeling involved and capable is vital\u2014especially when we can also communicate: \u201cWe\u2019ll figure this out together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-connection\">Connection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Stress isolates. One of the most healing things we can offer is connection. This means paying genuine attention\u2014not just to the situation, but to the person. It\u2019s also important to remember that we\u2019re probably not the most important person in their life. What matters is who they want to connect with. We can support this simply by asking: \u201cWould you like to call someone?\u201d Even if that\u2019s not possible, we can talk about who they\u2019re thinking of. This brings that person into the mental landscape\u2014and eases the pain of loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hope\">Hope<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to build a bridge between what happened and what comes next. We do this by reflecting back small, concrete, positive facts; suggesting realistic steps; and acknowledging what\u2019s hard. It\u2019s essential not to offer exaggerated or false reassurance. Instead, provide solid, real stepping stones. For example, let them know what will happen next, reassure them that help is on the way, and confirm that you&#8217;re staying with them. Predictable steps and clear words pointing toward the future can spark a sense of hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychological first aid is a compassionate, down-to-earth response to a tough situation. You don\u2019t need special tools to offer it\u2014but what you focus on, how you listen, and what you reflect back does matter. It makes a difference if we show up with respect and believe in the other person\u2014especially when they\u2019re struggling to believe in themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can\u2019t &#8220;solve&#8221; someone else\u2019s life, but we can be there for the first few steps.
