An international youth exchange always has something special to offer: making new friends and connections, learning a lot about cooperating with peers and a wide range of experiences that last beyond the moment. The Youth for Change programme was just that for Erik, one of the participants. He shared how this youth exchange transformed his perspective and motivated him to embark on team volunteering.
‘The most important lesson I learned during this exchange is that it’s always better to share your ideas and ask for help rather than trying to figure everything out on your own. People’s different perspectives can bring new ideas, opportunities, and insights. In the end, I’ve also learned that two minds are always brighter than just one’ – he wrote.

‘This youth exchange has been one of the most pleasant surprises for me, and it has definitely been an unforgettable experience.
It was a pleasant surprise because even though I applied for the event, I wasn’t initially in the mood to participate. However, looking back from the end, I now know that it was a vital experience. I learned so many things, developed new friendships, got to know new cultures and different dialects, and enjoyed wandering around Budapest with my cultural group.
In the beginning, it was a little strange being around so many unfamiliar people, each with their own unique personalities and perspectives on the world. However, as I got to know everyone better, I started to feel more comfortable. Being involved in team-building games and brainstorming together to find solutions made me feel really good about being part of the group.
The most important lesson I learned during this exchange is that it’s always better to share your ideas and ask for help rather than trying to figure everything out on your own. People’s different perspectives can bring new ideas, opportunities, and insights. In the end, I’ve also learned that two minds are always brighter than just one.
This might be a little unexpected, but for me, the greatest gift from the exchange is the friendships I developed along the way. I never imagined that such important relationships could form in just 10 days, but I was truly amazed. Some of these wonderful people remain a significant part of my life, and we stay in touch and talk to each other daily.
In addition, an important lesson I learned is that you never have to walk alone. There will always be somebody in your life that supports you and won’t let you fall. I’ve realized that if I need help, I shouldn’t be afraid to ask, because fear is what kills the best people.’
